Questions on When AM I?

Thanks in advance for any outside perspective.

I suppose the major problem I am having revolves around Video Wave 3 while trying to create either a chroma effect or one of the standard special effect.
At times I can modify the effect or tolerance as I watch the results on the view screen. But about 50% of the time this same proceadure causes a catastrophic freeze.
I am careful about defragmenting, and save and produce each clip before attempting to create an effect. The clips are relativly short.
2nd: let's say you have two 30 second clips. That is two saved files. You produce them, that is four. Let's say you want to cut them down to 25 seconds. Now you have six. You produce each 25 second clip. That adds up to eight you combine the two clips into a single chroma effect, that is nine; and produce it that is ten.

OR clip 1: save, produce (cut) save, produce
clip 2: save, produce (cut) save, produce

1 and 2 (blend) save, produce.

This may in fact be over-kill but I am so data loss shy that I have found one way to ensure the data is stored somewhere is the above process

Also I create my own file structure to by-pass the VW3 library structure. Could that have something to do with it?

Forgive any obtuse comments or questions as I have been off the board for a while.

1 Is any one else having problems with multi layer chroma functions on VW3?

2 When shunting between DC 10 PCI and ATI AGP, is there anything that can be done about the feedback? (Like looking into a mirror against mirror)

3 Is there any way to aovid the mountain of files that seem to accumulate?

3a I have found, and this is no guarenteed thing!! that once a clip is produced on VW3 all the sub files leading up to that point can be removed.

Perhaps it is just me but I have found the guidebooks to be virtually useless on the above not to mention a multiplicity of other subjects.

Out of pure morbid curiosity at this point I would like to know if the techniques I have developed on my own are clever, par for the course or pedantic.

I really do not care as long as I have a sense of where things stand.

Granted VW3 is an older program, but was it designed my sadists or am I doing something fundamentally wrong as it seems to work perfectly until I stop experimenting and attempt to actually accomplish something productive.
I have accomplished a great deal but it is like living with a psychotic mother-in-law you never know what or when or why.
